OMD! – (OH MY DOG)
What a great Dog Day we had this past Saturday!
Tail Wags to the Volunteers from CHA. As you can see from the photos – they got in there and made dogs shiny clean and owners happy! They washed and nail clipped over 30 dogs, smiling the whole time! A whopping $308 was donated to the CHA Shelter.
Bow Wows to Kathy, Aurora, Kaitlyn for volunteering to help out wherever they could!
A huge Howl Out to Kirsten the intern for directing this event and to Nick for getting all of these great photos.
Thank you to all that brought the dogs – owners, foster owners and CHA volunteers. Please know Nick, Aurora and I truly enjoy having Dog Day each year for the dogs.
We have four dogs and three are rescues and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Didn’t get enough dog love this past weekend? Go to the 5K Dog Jog this coming Saturday, August 22nd. Registrations are in the lobby or go to http://www.chadogjog.com/.
See you all next year and there were 27 dogs in the jar!

| “Everyone should give cardio interval training a shot. I’ve only been doing it for a week (only three times this week) and it is quite a workout! I typically burn burn at least 200 calories in 20 minutes and my heart is pumping! The time flies by because I am more focused on my heart rate and the short intervals (only 30 seconds to one minute). It sure beats 40+ minutes of running. I feel much more productive and it gets my heart pumping for the day. give it a try… You’ll be glad you did! By the way…I’ve never run before in my life!!!”
- Jen
“I thought I had a good grasp on interval training, but after attending the seminar with Nick and Charlie, I realized I knew nothing. Nick gave us a simple equation to figure our Maximum Heart Rate and then took us through a sample interval workout. It was easy to translate the workout to any machine just by using a heart rate monitor. As a marathon runner, I often wondered why I never lost any weight despite running what seemed like a million miles a week. Nick explained that interval training can be done in conjunction with training for long distances.
Nick was so knowledgeable about this subject. For example, I learned that after cardiovascular exercise or weight training, the body continues to need oxygen at a higher rate than before the exercise began. This sustained oxygen consumption is known as Excess Postexercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC). Because the body continues to expend energy after exercise, EPOC plays a supplemental role to an exercise program in weight management.
I am so glad I attended this very informative seminar. The fact that Go Fitness sees the importance of educating its clients in this way makes the membership all the more worthwhile.”
- Tasha

Woof! Dog Day News!
Look for Dog Day – August 15th 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. out in the front yard of the gym.
Dog Day is a tradition at GO:Fitness Center started six years ago out of the mutual love of dogs amongst the members, staff and owners.
One purpose of Dog Day is to provide a comfortable setting for people looking to adopt a dog. Another purpose is to provide a way for our members to enjoy our place!
Dog Day will have baths and nail trimmings for your dog(s). Elissa O’Sullivan will do a 20 minute talk on how to run with your dogs and/or questions about running with your dog and why dogs lunge, bark, etc. while on leash.
Noodles and Co. will have food and coupons.
Baths will be a $10 donation and Nail trimming will be a $5 donation to CHA.
CHA Animal Shelter is a nonprofit animal shelter in northeast Columbus, Ohio. CHA is funded solely by donations from adoption fees, donations from the public and our own fundraising efforts. Check them out at http://www.chaanimalshelter.org/.

I am so glad we are leading the industry with our fitness center.
We lead the industry by being the first to have a functional line of equipment.
We were the first to have a free 3-part orientation for each member, to make sure they are comfortable and have the info they need to use the equipment safely and effectively.
We are the first to have all the functional equipment (toys) members need to have fun and effective workouts.
We are the first to give every member software to layout workouts and nutritional tracking anf information.
Now we lead the industry by having free monthly training, with a certified trainer, included with every membership. Because everyone needs some guidance.
Seriously, does a new treadmill or the latest bicep curl machine get you your results, or will having a a well thought-out goal, a great plan (built by a professional) and meeting with a coach to keep you motivated and on the right track get your the results you are looking for?
With Go: Fitness, expect more, get results, have fun!

Well, Brad and I are sitting in Boston, and we are shocked at how many trainers are just so focused on the wrong things when working with clients.
We are glad that we have the coaches we do that are working with our clients.
Just as important, we are glad that we have clients that appreciate they type of training and coaching we do, to help get them results and enjoy life.
Thanks all,
Nick

Sorry it has been so long since my last post. With the training our staff goes thru, we have just been ensuring that everyone is getting a great training session every time they work with a coach.
I am so glad we are seeing a pick-up of people working out at Go: Fitness.
We love to see our clients working the stress off, and having fun.
Nothing beats stress like showing up, getting greeted, and working hard. Those of you who work with coaches also know how great it can be to have one person focused on you, being your cheerleader, and helping you on your path to reaching your goals.
Don’t bring your stress with you when you come in, because we aren’t going to ask you about your politics or what the economy has done to you. We are just going to help you on your way to getting the body you want.
See you soon!

We don’t talk too much about Go: Sports in these Blog Posts, but this one was so great we had to include it.
“Go: Sports has given our son so many benefits since he began the program last Spring. The sessions at Go: Sports have been instrumental in changing the way Oliver plays the game of basketball.
His speed and agility have increased ten-fold and helped him become a strong player for Upper Arlington High School. He can jump, rebound and out-run any opponent on the floor. His defense is no longer a weakness. He is a definite force on the court.
It is wonderful to hear comments from friends and family about how much Oliver has improved this year. The coaches at Go: Sports not only teach but support, motivate and build the athlete’s confidence in their athletic ability. It is not hard to get Oliver to attend his sessions at Go: Sports because he knows that he is becoming a better basketball player and is seeing immediate results on the court.
To see our son elevate his game and play with confidence makes the investment into his GO sessions PRICELESS!
-Scott and Lianne McGlade (Oliver’s parents – age 16)”

So are you feeling stressed?
It’s cold outside and the economy is in a downslide. You really can’t control either of those, but one thing you can control during these tough times is your health. It’s after all, your most important asset!
You’ll want to make sure that your weight and fitness don’t go on the same roller coaster that the stock market seems to be on.
During stressful times, some people are inclined to eat more and exercise less. While getting out of the house and exercising may feel like a struggle, it will actually give you a greater sense of calm and control. And if you need someone to help you stay motivated, a personal Coach just might be your answer.
But how can you spend money right now?
If you can forego that Starbucks in the morning or that new pair of shoes you have been eyeing, both of which are things you may want but not need, you will have the money to join Go Fitness or get some guidance from one of our expert Coaches, and take care of something really important—YOU.
There are countless studies that show effective exercise can:
- Increase Mental Alertness
- Decrease Mental Stress / Lifts Depression
- Help you Sleep Better
- Decrease Physical Stress
- Builds Self-esteem
- Boosts Memory
These seem like some great reasons to get some good exercise! You can actually pull ahead of your competitors and weather the troubling times that seem to be happening around you.
The great part about Go: Fitness’s workouts are that they are fun! Come see our lively atmosphere and meet our Coaches. Sample a Group Training Class or meet with a Coach 1-on-1 if you need the attention. All of our memberships come with Personal Coaching, to make sure you have all the information you need to reach your goals and keep you grounded.
While the rest of the world seems to be spinning a little out of control, find a way to be in charge and feel good. Come join us at Go Fitness and take control of your health, help yourself look better, all while having a great time.
Let me know if you have any questions, or if you need any help!

Last week, I spent 3 days in Providence Rhode Island, speaking in front of gym owners and trainers about Functional Training and putting a system in place that benefits their members.
I was shocked to hear how resistant most every owner was.
“Why spend that much time, the clients will never know.” Was something one owner said.
When I went on to explain that our system allows for clients to work with multiple trainers, and freed the client to figure out the best path for them, another owner argued that “Trainers can’t handle their clients having that much freedom.”
When they saw photos and videos of our Club, they laughed and said in their gym, stuff like that would never get used. They said their people just want machines.
Instead of arguing, I just smiled and could not wait to get back to Go: Fitness.
I am so glad our clients/members like having fun while working out, and have realized that machines are not the answer; but working smarter and having a fun experience is.
I am really happy with the relationship our Coaches and Clients have, giving everyone the freedom for success in the club.
Everyone keep up the good work!

You know what, I love our Club.
Recently, I visited one of our competitors.
For 20 minutes there was a large amount of people standing around complaining about the news they saw on TV. The economy is bad, the elections choices are horrible, and this and that.
One guy actually walked down the line of treadmills bothering every person on the treadmills. Then I come back to GO: Fitness, and I see what seems to be a happy group of people actually working out hard, and letting off their stress of the day.
I guess that is why I am writing this BLOG.
2 reasons.
First – I want to let you know that effective training reduces mental, emotional and physical stress. It releases endorphins and lets you think more clearly in dealing with the speed-bumps life throws at you!
Second – I am so glad you train with us, where everyone acts like they are part of a huge family. There are people of all shapes, sizes and fitness levels striving to get results. People are not coming in to bring other people down, everyone seems to be trying to pick other people up, and lighten each others’ mood.
Thanks so much for making Go: Fitness a successful and positive place for everyone.

The other day I walked into another gym (paid their $30 daily fee), and watched the way that their trainers treat their customers. I was shocked, there was a tremendous difference. But all of a sudden it dawned on me why there was a difference. The difference between other gyms’ trainers and Go: Fitness’ Coaches can be summed up in the words we use: Customer and Client.
What is the difference? A customer is someone you sell something to. A client is someone under your care.
This is the reason we talk about our clients in ways to help them reach their goals, and improve their life.
We are not interested in selling personal training in short packs. We have made our Coaching/Training affordable to everyone. We have Coaching/Training Clubs (Fast F.I.T., our upgraded Pump & Pedal, and ever popular B.Y.A.), Small Group Coaching, Partner and 1-on-1.
We have hour and half hour sessions. You can train 1 time a month up to 4 times a week; whatever your financial and time budget will allow.
Our programs are designed to educate and elevate our clients, in a way that helps them reach their goals, in a fun and affective way.
We are not interested in selling you anything.

By now we’re all familiar with Michael Phelps, who many are calling the greatest Olympian of all time. Well on his way to breaking the 36 year old mark of 7 Gold medals in one Olympics, many have wondered what it takes to feed this Olympic athlete, who says all he does is eat, train and sleep.
For Phelps to fuel his performance and maintain body weight, he reportedly consumes 12,000 calories each day! This is about 9,000 -11,000 more than most individuals … but most individuals also aren’t putting in 30+ hours of training each week.
Instead, most are hoping to be active for just a few hours each week. And this is fine for general health and disease prevention. But of course nutrition plays a major role in this picture as well.
Michael Phelps doesn’t have much to worry about — his biggest worry should be winning those last 3 golds. But for a majority of the American population, there’s a major concern, with over 66% overweight or obese.
Some scientists suggest it’s all about waist circumference — the size of your waist dictates how healthy (or unhealthy) you are. To accurately measure your waist circumference, take a tape measure around the navel (belly button) and keep the tape parallel with the floor.
Women’s Healthy and Unhealthy Waist Measurements -
- Waist circumference of over 31 inches (about 80cm) indicates slight health risk.
- Waist of over 35 inches (about 90cm) indicates substantially increased health risk.
Men’s Healthy and Unhealthy Waist Measurements -
- Waist of over 37 inches (about 94cm) indicates slight health risk.
- Waist of over 40 inches (about 102cm) indicates substantially increased health risk.
Do you want to know how many calories YOU need each day? I can tell you it’s likely far from 12,000 calories each day! But you might be surprised as to how many calories and what type of calories you need to eat to get the body you want.
I hope you enjoy watching the Olympics, and are inspired by Michael Phelps going for the gold. We are here if you get inspired, inspired to simply lose your love handles, or even lose 100 lbs!

The other day, when I was out and about, I was standing in line to checkout at a hardware store, when I started talking to a guy about what he did for a living. He was about my height (5’ 10”) and had to be over 300 lb, and not well built. (he was rather round)
After he told me what he did, he asked what I did, and I said I owned a training center (fitness Center). The first thing he asked me was, “What type of protein do you recommend, ‘cause I need to get back in the gym?” and always followed up by “So, how much do you bench?”
I stood a little awestruck for a minute, because I was unsure what to tell this very nice guy. First thing that went through my head was, “that this is like a man in hell asking if he is wearing enough sunscreen.” (dude you have much bigger things to worry about)
There are so many other things to worry about than if you are eating 50 grams of Whey, Casein, or Egg Protein. Also, I don’t care how much weight can I lay down on my back and press off of me.
So, what would you tell him?
The things I feel this guy needs to worry are:
- Am I eating the right amount of calories, throughout the day?
- Am I doing any kind of effective cardio?
- Is my resistance training adding to, or subtracting from my ability to enjoy life or work effectively?
These are the big things. Once you are doing these things, we can start breaking down the big things into improving the little things we are doing.
Just work hard and effective, make better eating choices and sleep well!
Don’t get caught up in weather Blueberries have 35% more antioxidants than the next fruit, if you are drinking a 6-pack of bear every day.
Go enjoy life.
Just my thoughts.

This week, I have been stopped by two members that said they finally got around to listening to our seminar “Is your Cardio Making You Fatter?“
Both people had the same impression, they always thought we were against people running or aerobics. After listening to the science and our advice, they thought they would try the interval training for a month, and see if there were any changes.
One member has been doing cardio for 40-60 min. 4 times a week for over 2 years, and has seen little results, but kept trucking away. She was shocked, that after only 3 weeks, she has dropped an entire pant and dress size, all while doing only 20 minutes of interval training 4 times a week! That right, better results in 1/3 of the time!
The second person, a guy, said he feels like his energy level has gone up dramatically, while his resting heart rate has dropped, all that while doing 15-18 minutes of work three times a week. Again, better results in 1/3 of the time!
Now, I am not against walking and jogging, some of our coaches and members even love the long races, they like pushing their bodies and doing their best. However, if you are trying to loose fat, or get into shape fast, the long slow cardio is the wrong tool for the job.
Try talking to a coach, and setting up a session to go over a personal interval training program for you!

Today was short, only had one seminar and truthfully I almost walked out… not because it was a bad seminar but because it made me feel like an idiot. For those of you who don’t know, I have no rhythm/can’t dance and the seminar was a DANCE aerobics. Yes dance NOT step aerobics. In all honesty I had someone ask me if I was drunk because I was that bad.
Like I said earlier I almost walked out, the only thing that made me stay through the entire class was thinking of all our clients at Go:fitness who every day are put through crazy NICK exercises and keep coming back for more the next time! I’m just glad there isn’t a video of this for anyone to see!
Overall it was a great trip! I had an overwhelming amount of information presented to me the last four days and truthfully only about 5-10 percent of it was new. Don’t get me wrong it was very beneficial to re-hear all the information, my point is that what I have learned and experienced from working at Go:fitness the past 16 months is great stuff. NICK always tells me and all the other trainers that what is happening in our gym is innovative, and yes I believed him, but to actually see and hear the same/similar philosophies and techniques presented at the IDEA conference which is an extremely respected organization shows that GO:fitness is not your average, two star gym it’s a 5 Star Training Center. Can’t wait to see everyone next week,

The last full day of the IDEA fit convention is officially over! Today I took a seminar on the Power Plate (better known at Go:fitness as the giant vibrator…) The seminar was very informative, teaching me a few actual exercises you can use the Power Plate for other than just stretching! Sorry today is a short blog, it’s been a long week and I need a power nap before I go checkout he IDEA fit closing ceremonies/party in two hours.

Today was just a exciting as yesterday! The seminars I attended today were “yoga”, “nutrition for the long run”, and “TRX suspension training”. Much like yesterdays “stretch fusion”, yoga whipped my butt! Great workout, I need to start taking out yoga classes at GO:Fitness! “Nutrition for the long run” was basically my basic level nutritional class at OSU but condensed into 2.5 hours (have tons of notes to bring back). Lastly the TRX seminar was awesome. TRX is very similar to our gymnastic rings which we have on our monkey bars. Again great workout and I have tons ; I mean tons of new exercise to share with everyone when we get back. After the TRX seminar I waked around the actual expo (for the first time). Let just say like any other industry there are some great products out the but for the most part there is a lot of crap. Two pieces of equipment I ran across for the first time was a “viper rope climber” and a “krankcyle”! the viper rope climber is hard to explain but picture combining a lat pull down machine and a treadmill and your got it (brining back flyer). Lastly the krankcyle is awesome! It’s basically a spinning bike for your arms. We used these in college during cross-training for wrestling!
Again a very successful day! Time to eat and see the strip!

The first day of the idea health and fitness conference is officially over! So far this trip has exceeded my expectations. So far I have attended three seminars, non of which have been 100% new information. I attended “stretch fusion”, “lean on me partner workout”, and a short seminar on IDEA themselves! Stretch fusion was a workout/wake up call that I need to stretch more consistently (Yes even us in the industry need to be reminded sometimes). The partner seminar was great, I have a bunch of information/techniques I picked up on how to make partner training and group training more efficient as well as fun! I would like to close by saying the first day here really has gotten me excited about the fitness industry. Many view the industry as a college/ part time job, well for some that may be true but just seeing the thousands of successfully, professional, and health conscious individuals who have and continue to elevate the industry today has really gotten me excited! Ok now it’s time to EAT!

As some of you might know, about two weeks ago, we put the camera up in the gym, and let people talk about their experiences at our training center.
So, we want to announce that some of these testimonials are now posted. You can click the link or visit Go: Fitness’ web site, and click on the “About US & Solutions for You” and scroll down to Member Testimonials.
I know we missed some of you and we will be mixing some of the ones we have already shot, with new ones we will shoot at the end summer!
It was very nice to hear over and over that people like the training, and like the family feeling we have worked hard to create.
If you would like to share these testimonials with your friends, please do. Let them know what kind of training center you workout in, and what actual members have to say.
By the way, these are not short little “Love the gym!” testimonials. These are actual people and their thoughts and experiences, so the testimonials are 2 to 3 minutes long per person. I don’t want you to think I am scaring you off from watching them. I actually want you to think there is something to watch. (who really wants the short “you guys are great” and then on to the next person testimonial.)
I encourage you to watch one, every other day for a week, and see if there is any story that might help you or a friend of yours!
Stop by the Member Service Area and leave some feedback after you watch them!
Thanks!

Well, I finally threw my last strongman contest, and I am relieved and sad!
It has been a great run and I think there are/were only one or two promoters that have been throwing contests longer than I have in the United States. And I have been one of the longest run State Chairman, winning “State Chairman of the Year” once.
Why did I like the sport so much? It was the camaraderie. The bonding that developed from guys being guys for 4-8 hours on a Saturday. The friendships that were born by 5-20 guys in one weight class killing themselves at a contest to give it all, and cheering each person on to do their best. Doing it together.

After that, it was proved that proper training could win titles and prevent injuries. Yes, winning North America’s Strongest Man twice (yep, the only person to do that!) was pretty cool. People still don’t believe that the training I did, or the other guys from Columbus, @ Built Solid, or what Phil Pfister did was real. We all had to have done something else. I have had 3 athletes I have coached compete at World’s, 2 of them finished on the podium, one of the wining.
Now I see Strength Coaches throwing Strongman events into their training of their athletes, and I gasp sometimes. Why? Because they are not teaching fundamental movement skills, and Injuring their athletes just to do something cool. The proper form of flipping a tire gets great results, but I would guess 1 out of 10 coaches actually train it right. We don’t use it in my Sports Performance facility because the risk to benefit ratio is out of whack. Strongman used wrong, will wreck the body, so we don’t use it just because it is cool.
So, I will continue to support the natural athletes in the sport, help the promoters and the organizations that promote strongman. But I am better off to promote proper lifting technique and program design. Opening eyes and changing the concepts of effective training.
Click here, and let me know if you are interested in keeping apprised of new products and info when they are announced.

Bathed, clipped and trained – the dogs had their day on Sunday, June 8. It was great day to bathe a dog – they dried quickly.
A big thankful WOOF to all the volunteers from The Friends of the Shelter, Franklin County Animal Shelter Director Lisa Wahoff and Community Outreach Director Sue Smith,
Dog trainer Matthew Voedisch, ABCDT and Susie Vogel, just graduated from OSU Vet School and the fastest nail clipper east of the Mississippi.
Nancy Kaler from Grandview (with 5 year old Adam, a Miniature Pincher who needs adopted)
“This was a great idea for a fitness center to host this event. It is a wonderful way to reach out to the community.”

Patty Sturtz from Upper Arlington (owner of Bella, a Whippet)
“It’s convenient and awesome for a fitness center to hold Dog Day, especially to have it out in front of the center draws attention.”
- Heard about the event from Sharon
- Would attend the event again if held in the future

Mindy Bossert from Grandview (owner of Scooch, a Standard Schnauzer)
“I like the fact that my own gym hosts this kind of event. It’s fun to associate the two aspects together.”
- Heard about the event by coming to Go: Fitness
Dog Day began five years ago as a social event for

the members. Dog Day is meant to get the dogs out of the shelter and to our front yard where they could relax and be themselves to meet the members and public looking for adoptable dogs. Nick, Sharon and Aurora have four dogs themselves – two from the shelter and one other rescue.

It is finally making sense to our clients.
This week alone I have had 2 members stop me and talk to me about their experiences with our trainers and our training center compared to their friend’s places or when they have talked to other trainers.
As an owner, I love hearing that the members are getting what they are paying for, they are happy, and they see the difference.

Greetings from Providence, RI and The Perform Better Functional Training Summit!
Wow, over the this weekend, I have been surrounded by some of the best Personal Trainers (800 of them) in North America. And I want to let our members know your coaching staff could have presented almost all of the info that the presenters delivered this weekend.
I have been presented with a lot of good info, and there are a lot of good trainers in the U.S., but there is not a staff out there that works as well as a team as ours does. Other owners talk about one good trainer, and then complain that at best they have a lot of average trainers. I am blessed with an entire staff.
I have a couple of good audio interviews from the weekend, and will post them later this week.
See you on Monday!

Welcome to our Blog.
The Owners, Coaches, Customer Service Reps and even some members will be sharing their thoughts, Rants, raves, trials, tribulations, observations and advice.
Take everything with a grain of salt, and keep in mind, because they are opinions!
One of our Master Coaches, Charlie Guldan will be at the Grandview Hop on Saturday Night 4-9 in Panzerra’s parking lot. Stop by and say “hi!” You might win a prize also!
